Swindon’s latest tourist attraction has been causing quite a stir amongst locals around Coate Water which is said to have cost £1.2million – the name given to the new attraction is ‘The Swamp’ Andy Brice who lives in Lawn described the patch of land that has been swamped due to recent weather as a “Swamp” and an “eyesore”.

The Swamp – Beware of Ogres

The newly named patch of land known as ‘The Swamp’ is located on the edge of Coate Water roundabout, next to a crossing that takes pedestrians from Coate Water to the bottom of Marlborough Road.

The Controversial tourist attraction first came to light at the beginning of the year, but has still found headlines in the towns local paper ‘Swindon Advertiser’ and made for popcorn reading on social media platform Facebook. Jokes aside though, this has become quite an eyesore with not much joy of sorting anytime soon, reading responses from SBC.

The project that caused this unwanted tourist attraction was the brainchild of the previous Tory Council which saw two subways which connected Queens Drive and Marlborough Road filled in which has left the area a quagmire.

Heidi Alexander, a Labour Councillor candidate had contacted Cllr Neil Hopkin, which led Hopkins contacting Cllr Chris Watts and appropriate council officers.

The Swamp has caused much anger, but most comments and posts have been in tongue & cheek and sarcasm such as from Ashley Eaglestone who took to Facebook this week, posting on Swindon Notice Board “This new attraction in Swindon at Coate Water. What a great attraction at £1.2million of taxpayers money. The Subways were filled in which nobody in the area seemed to want done, plus a new pond which has sprung up on the opposite side of the road and a bonus swamp. Thanks SBC for these new fun landmarks in Swindon”.

other comments about ‘The Swamp’ included a comment from Clive Owden “It certainly does look a filthy, dirty sight, what was the drop into the entrance of the subway that went under Marlborough Road is now full of sludge and liquid slop and has been in that state since it was filled in, a terrific addition to the area, well done Swindon Borough Council”.

Pete Mallinson summed up the council with “The Council is run by halfwits”.

The Swamp even made it onto Trip Advisor as ‘The South Swindon Swamp’ which had many positive raving reviews, listed as the 33rd best thing to do in Swindon out of 59 things. However it seems Trip advisor has since taken the page down.

In its short lived time on Trip Advisor, ‘The Swamp’ saw several 5star reviews such as “Such a lovely swamp. I hated how the water used to drain away, thanks to the council we can now have a new swimming pool. This will be a lovely replacement for the Oasis. Going on to say “I also hated how I used to be able to freely walk under the road. Waiting at the lights is clearly superior in every way.”

Another said “You might think that the site is a perfect spot for a subway, for completely safe passage into Coate Water park for dog walkers, pedestrians, cyclists etc but you would be wrong.

“It is surely much more fun to dodge the traffic all while being able to enjoy the sights of the swamp and the ‘pond’ on the other side of the road.”

On slightly disappointed reviewer said “Didn’t see any ogres. Maybe next time!”

If you’ve still not had a chance of seeing the Swamp, Knowing the incompetence of the Swindon Borough Council, you likely have till the end of Spring when the weather will likely do the job for the council and naturally rid the swamp of water.

Note: Obviously this is a tongue in cheek story and not meant to be taken seriously.
