It’s 1991, Noel Gallagher is a roadie for indie band Inspiral Carpets when the band is on tour. The tour takes the band to Swindon’s iconic Oasis where they performed on 28th April that year with Blue Orchids.
In a Radio One interview with Noel, he recalls memories of the days before the brothers became the kings of ‘Britpop’. The story goes that during the visit to Swindon, Liam had also come along to the gig and was so taken by the name of the iconic dome building, he suggested to Noel the name Oasis would make for a good name for their own band, which at the time was called ‘The Rain’.

The brothers were famous for their backstage fighting and on tour feuding, so it was not surprising that Noel was not convinced by the name Oasis, thinking it sounded more like a reggae band name, but upon their return to Manchester, the decision was made to name the band Oasis. From their on, the band never looked back in anger, well not over the name anyway.
Thats right! One of the biggest British bands of all time, up there with the Beatles name was inspired by a space age looking dome building in the centre of Swindon in Wiltshire.
The world can thank Swindon for the inspiration behind the name of the Britpop legends who rose to global fame

Ironically, Oasis never played a gig here, which is a real shame!
So that’s the story, morning glory.
The iconic Oasis building is still under threat, with its future and purpose still unknown, for more details and to support the Save Oasis Swindon campaign, click HERE.
