The Irish-born centre-back started his career in his hometown of Wexford in Ireland, signing his first deal with the club in 2014 at 18. Having been a key part of the club’s progression in his three seasons there, Delaney earned his move to the EFL with then-Championship side, Burton Albion.

During his time with Burton, Delaney had a successful loan spell with Cork City, scoring six goals in 30 league appearances, with Cork lifting the League of Ireland Premier Division trophy at the end of the 2017 season, whilst also winning the FAI Cup and the Munster Senior Cup during his time there too.
Moves to Rochdale, AFC Wimbledon (loan), Bolton and Morecambe all came next for the Irishman, with the majority of that time spent in League One, with over 110 appearances made in the English third tier in his career so far.

Delaney has also achieved success at League Two level, with the defender earning promotion during his time with Bolton in the 2020-21 season, before his time with Morecambe from 2021 until 2023.
The 27-year-old most recently represented League Two rivals Newport County, where he was given the captain’s armband and played a key part in County’s 2023/24 campaign, scoring one goal and four assists in the season just gone, before looking to join us here in SN1 this summer for the upcoming 2024/25 season.
After completing his move to the club, Town’s latest addition said: “I’m delighted that it’s all done now and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.
“The stature of the club and the head coach spoke to me about the outlook and what he wants to achieve here and what he want the players here to strive for, so that really excited me.
“I want just want to get out and play in front of the Swindon fans and, hopefully, achieve success this year.”
