Swindon Town are delighted to announce the signing of former Volendam defender George Cox on a one-year deal, subject to EFL approval.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion youngster returns to England following a five-year spell in the Netherlands, where he played the majority of the time in the Dutch top tier, the Eredivisie.

Cox’s first move away from the Seagulls, saw him move on loan to then-League Two side Northampton Town where he made five appearances back in the 2018-19 season.

But the defender’s next loan move saw him move out to the Netherlands having originally joined Fortuna Sittard at the start of the 2019-20 season where he went on to make 23 appearances in his first season in Sittard-Geleen.

After his original temporary move, Cox made the move permanent at the start of the 2020/21 season and went on to spend a successful five seasons in Holland, making 131 appearances in the Eredivisie in total, scoring eight times and recording nine assists in that time.

A season with Volendam followed for Cox in the 2023/24 season which saw him make over 20 appearances and record an assist for the Eerste Divisie side.

Now, the 26-year-old returns to England with a wealth of top-tier Dutch football under his belt and is eager to return to his home country and build on his current playing career to offer an exciting option down Town’s left-hand side going forward.

Upon signing for Swindon Town, Cox said: “I’m delighted to be back in England and get back to playing English football again, I can’t wait to get going.

“I think playing in the Netherlands for five years has made me more of an all-round footballer, I’ve learnt how to see the game differently and a different kind of culture of football as well so I took quite a lot from it in all different aspects.

“I’m a left back, which has always been an attacking left-back, I’ve been known for dead ball deliveries, my crossing and just getting in and amongst the goals and assists.”

Following his arrival, Head of Football Jamie Russell also added: “George is a player we’re really excited by and think he will offer an exciting, attacking dynamic to the left-hand side of our team.

“He’s made over a century of appearances in the Dutch top-tier and we’re looking forward to seeing him continue to develop during his time with us in the 2024/25 season.

“We feel he still has an extra level of performance he can reach and we hope that we can be the team that brings that out of him to deliver success this campaign.”

George Cox becomes our latest addition of the 2024-25 summer transfer window, and we look forward to seeing him in action as a Town player.
