34yrs ago, Mars renamed the iconic Marathon bar to Snickers. Little known fact about the nutty bar is that its original name was actually Snickers, named after the family horse and manufactured in Chicago. It was rebranded to the iconic name for many GenX to Marathon.
In 1990 Mars rebranded its nutty sister bar back to Snickers which was not initially well received, but over the years grew on people, not knowing of why it was rebranded. For the GenX, we will always remember and know it as Marathon.
This year however, Mars will be bringing back the iconic name Marathon for a limited time, so you will have to be quick if you want a nostalgic bite!
Snickers which launched back in 1930 consisting of nougat, caramel and peanuts wrapped up in milk chocolate became a popular treat in the US.
The naming of the bar to ‘Marathon’ back in 1968 with its launch in the UK, but in 1990 Mars decided to rebrand back to Snickers to fall in line with the rest of its global brand.
Mars have confirmed the return of the iconic name Marathon which apart from a short appearance back in 2019, the name Marathon has not been a permanent fixture on the British shelves of over 30yrs
Five years ago, Morrisons Supermarket caused a nostalgic stampede to the confectionary shelves when they stocked a Marathon retro edition sold exclusively in the UK stores for three months. The stir caused by the launch of this retro limited edition bar forced Morrisons to implement a limit to each purchase by customers after one customer bought 404 bars in one go.
On Twitter, formerly X, fans of the Marathon showed their support.
One said: “Just make it permanent, and while at it can we have Jiff and Opel Fruits back”.
Another said: “Great News… Can we have Aztec bars back too please?”
A third fan of Marathon said: “Yay! I have not bought one since they changed the name. I guess the got the message after 30years…”
Another went on to say: “OMG always has been and always will be a Marathon”.
Literally, hundreds of people took to X to show their excitement of Marathon is coming back.
