Here at Entertainment Swindon, we have been hard at it watching ‘Horror’ movies of all kinds, usually thought of as a more adult affair, but we thought we would have a look at whats out there for the kids and theres some surprisingly spooky fun movies out there for the kids that the whole family will enjoy together.
No1: The Goonies
Theres not a kid of the 80s that is an adult of today with kids and maybe even grandkids, what better scary movie for kids could you watch this Halloween than The Goonies! Time to pass the torch of the best kids scary movie of all time and a fun nostalgic sharing moment with your kids on the sofa with popcorn and don’t forget the pizza!
When it comes to kids’ scary adventure movies, The Goonies is bar none, not only was The Goonies a brilliantly written, directed, and acted movie, but it was also so much FUN! The adventures of these kids through the underground world, while being chased by the despicable villains known as the Fratellis, are fascinating to watch.
Goonies walks a fine line between cheerful and gruesome, with the very scenes that adults might object to are the scene the kids will love the best, so remember this… We watched this movie when we were kids, so let your kids have the enjoyment of this adventure that we did when we were their age.
The film is a mix of everything you find in a Spielberg action movie, made extra special by the infectious enthusiasm of the kids on screen with the backdrop of a fantastical story of buried stolen pirate treasure.
No2: Ghostbusters
Can you believe its been 40yrs since Ghostbusters hit the big screen! And still today, its one of the best and fun films ever made.
This iconic supernatural comedy received rave reviews when the movie came out in 1985, and today it continues to get rave reviews. The movie is about people, and thats what makes it a great film, with a great mismatch of characters coming together.
Ivan Reitman as director did the most awesome job of setting up comedy and suspense, that mixed with the amazing puppetry, practical effects and stunning special effects when you think of the decade it was made and what was possible on screen compared to todays CGI.
And you cant forget the sound track!!! As soon as you hear that theme tune on the radio, your head starts bopping, your feet start tapping and you just let rip when the song goes “Who you gunna call?…. Ghostbusters!”
No3: Adams Family (1991)
Another classic!… I cant go through Halloween season without not watching this movie!… The Adams Family is a hugely funny movie that I feel is wildly under-rated. Firstly it has an amazing cast that were just perfectly chosen for the roles, its an awesome comedy.
What better premise for a movie can you have than a dysfunctional family front and centre in a spooky setting.
No4: A Nightmare Before Christmas
One of the best stop-motion animation movies ever made, it is simply a gorgeous piece of work produced by Tim Burton. It tells the story of Jack Skellington longing for something more, something I think we can all emphasis, we’ve all been there…
Tim Burton producing with Henry Selick directing, was the perfect due for this movie, their creative imagination brought to life through old-school magic of stop-motion.
No5: Monsters Inc
Who doesn’t love a Pixar movie!… Monsters Inc is a great movie for the whole family, it will entertain kids and adults alike. Who would of guessed that monsters are as scared of kids as kids are of monsters? Well we know now after this awesome movie, monsters in the closet have finally been explained in a way, even adults can understand. There is a Monstropolis corporation beyond the closet where monsters collect kids screams, only problem is, kids today are just not scared of monsters anymore leaving Monstropolis short of screams leaving predictions of blackouts and even a complete energy shutdown.
Responsibility falls on the broad shoulders of a big blue monster named Sully (voice by John Goodman), who is the leading scream-producer. Sully looks like a cross between a gorilla and a bear. His best pal, Mike Wazowski (voice by Billy Crystal), is a green eyeball with arms and legs. Sully is brave and dedicated.
There must be villains, and this time they are Henry J. Waternoose (James Coburn), who looks like a crab crossed with a cartoon of Boss Tweed, and Randall Boggs (Steve Buscemi), a snaky schemer who wants to dethrone Sully as the champion scream collector. Their competition grows more urgent when a human child named Boo (voice by Mary Gibbs) goes where no human has gone before, through the closet door and into the monster world.
No6: Harry Potter (2001 – 2011)
An adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s popular children’s novels about Harry Potter, a boy who learns on his eleventh birthday that he is the orphaned son of two powerful wizards and possesses unique magical powers of his own.
He is summoned from his life as an unwanted child to become a student at Hogwarts, an English boarding school for wizards. There, he meets several friends who become his closest allies and help him discover the truth about his parents’ mysterious deaths.
No7: Casper (1995)
Another movie for all ages, for the family to sit back together on the sofa and enjoy a lovely fun movie about a cute ghost.
Casper (voiced by Malachi Pearson) is a kind young ghost who peacefully haunts a mansion in Maine. When specialist James Harvey (Bill Pullman) arrives to communicate with Casper and his fellow spirits, he brings along his teenage daughter, Kat (Christina Ricci). Casper quickly falls in love with Kat, but their budding relationship is complicated not only by his transparent state, but also by his troublemaking apparition uncles and their mischievous antics.
No8: Hocuspocus
After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and their new friend, Allison (Vinessa Shaw). After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy) who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches’ book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.
No9: Hotel Transylvania
When monsters want to get away from it all, they go to Count Dracula’s (Adam Sandler) Hotel Transylvania, a lavish resort where they can be themselves without humans around to bother them.
On one special weekend, Dracula invites creatures like the Invisible Man, the Mummy and others to celebrate the 118th birthday of his daughter, Mavis (Selena Gomez). However, an unforeseen complication unfolds when an ordinary human unwittingly crashes the party and falls in love with Mavis.
No10: Goosebumps
Upset about moving from the big city to a small town, young Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets his beautiful neighbor Hannah (Odeya Rush).
The teen is surprised to learn that Hannah’s mysterious father is R.L. Stine (Jack Black), the famous author of the best-selling “Goosebumps” series. When Zach accidentally unleashes the monsters from the fantastic tales, it’s up to Stine, his daughter and Cooper to return the beasts back to the books where they belong.
