This years John Lewis advert opens with seeing the main protagonist Sally rushing past customers who are exiting the John Lewis store on a winter’s day. We continue to see Sally rush through the store searching and looking around the cosmetic counters for something to buy.
We hear the store tanoy say “John Lewis is closing in 15 minutes”, Sally then makes her way to a row of dresses to which she starts to rummage through. We then see her pause as sometimes catches her attention behind the dresses.
We then see Sally walk through the gap of the dresses entering a magical portal of different types of dresses and fabrics. She then miraculously appears to come out of an antique looking wardrobe and ends up in an attic, which is perceived to have not been explored in a while.
As she walks out, some Christmas ball balls fall onto the floor. Sally then makes her way to a treasure chunk on the middle of the floor where we see a picture of herself and her little sister as children.
Each Christmas, the John Lewis Christmas advert has become a Christmas tradition, as much as family sat around a festive roast turkey dinner, the Kings Speech, and decorated Christmas trees in every living room.
For years, John Lewis have treated us to an epic mini-movie style festive advert. It’s as if Christmas season doesn’t start until the John Lewis advert has aired on our TV’s.
What has been at the centre of all John Lewis Christmas adverts, is that they have never been about John Lewis,
This year, John Lewis have broken with tradition and has for many not gone down well. As Christmas adverts go, it’s a lovely festive advert of family. Thats just what Christmas is about right? But this year it seams, John Lewis will not be at the top of our favourite Christmas advert.
