John Lewis finally dropped their Christmas advert on our screens last week, and although it was a nice festive advert, it wasn’t the epic mini-movie we are used to seeing. John Lewis over the past decade have treated us to some of the best festive adverts, their secret sauce, they never advertise their brand, they never advertise what they sell, they just put on a festive epic mini-movie to entertain us each Christmas.
So as the new John Lewis Christmas advert dropped, everyone was surprised at what they saw, it was all about the brand, all about the store, all about what they sell. The magic was lost and so was their crown.
This, the year where all the usual brands up their game and their budget. We’ve have the Waitrose ‘whodunit’, we’ve had the tearjerkers from Amazon and Tesco and of course who can forget Asda’s gnomes on a mission and Aldi’s Kevin the Carrot spy film spoof.
This year, it really does show how all the brands have upped their game with a long list of stars, awesome animated adventures and special effects. With John Lewis being the last to drop their Christmas advert, I guess we we’re expecting great things, a headline act, but what we got was a above average warm-up act.
For me the advert of the year has to be Asda and their ‘Gnomes of Christmas’, they had me at the A-Team theme tune and topped of by a gang of cheeky gnomes saving Christmas.
