On 4th February 2004, Mark Zuckerberg met with Harvard student Eduardo Saverin, and each of them agreed to invest $1,000 in the site. Zuckerberg launched the site, originally under the name of “TheFacebook”, located at thefacebook.com. Zuckerberg intended to create a website that could connect people around the university.

Today, Facebook is the largest, and most used social media platform on the internet with more than three billion users.

Although Facebook is no longer popular among younger generations, it is still the most used social network in the world.

For better or worse, when Zuckerberg launched Facebook, he changed the internet forever!

You wake up each morning and do your very best to not grab your phone and open the Facebook app, but we all do. Newsfeed notifications, private message notifications, its sat there on your phone calling your name, so you go through the motions and mindlessly start scrolling.

So how did we get here? Well, on the 4th February 2004, Zuckerberg, alongside Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, created Facebook, the social media platform that has impacted and shaped how we create relationships, present ourselves, maintain social hierarchies, run for office, consume media, and, become an addiction for all.

Today over 40% of the worlds population uses Facebook and over 2billion actively use the social media platform. In 2006 that Facebook opened to the public, leaving the confines of the College dorms and was let loose on the worlds public, now everyone could create a Facebook profile.

Facebook wasn’t new, in fact in the mid 1990s in the internets infancy, there was Classmates.com, SixDegrees.com, Friendster and in 2003 who can forget MySpace!

Fast forward to 2025, Facebook stands champion, ruling the world of Social Media.

Happy Birthday Facebook.
