Spring has arrived and Swindon’s STEAM Museum have so much to share! From exciting new events and amazing Easter activities, to their new merchandise and exhibition ‘A Job For Life’.
New Exhibitions

2025 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the modern railway. Railway 200 is a year-long national partnership celebrating the railways past, present and future.
To help tell the Railway 200 story, four main themes will be explored:
- Skills & Education
- Innovation, Technology & Environment
- Heritage, Culture & Tourism
- Celebrating Railway People
As part of the Rail200 celebrations at STEAM we are exploring these themes in two new exhibitions. Doing Time and A Job for Life look at the skills and training that were required to work on the railways in the past.
Doing Time – The Railway Apprentice, which opened in February, tells the fascinating story of the young men, and women, who entered the world of railways as a trainee apprentice to learn the skills of the trade on the job.
A Job for Life explores the career path to becoming a steam engine driver, a lifelong dedication that would take years to achieve.
Both exhibitions will showcase never before seen materials including apprentice made pieces and documents from engine driver Mutual Improvement Classes.
A Job For Life

Have you ever wondered what it took to become a steam engine driver on the GWR? Our new exhibition ‘A Job for Life’ explores the career path that many railway workers aspired to, from humble beginnings as an engine cleaner to the prestigious role of a driver.Opening on Saturday 5th April.
New Events at STEAM

We are pleased to announce an exciting new event at STEAM this year, ‘Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers’ live in concert with Aldbourne Band!
Following the success of The Snowman in Concert over Christmas last year, Aldbourne Band will be back but this time to perform the soundtrack to the inventing duo’s 1993 British classic, which saw the debut of fan favourite villain Feathers McGraw.
