We are at that time of year again, where we are ready to say goodbye to another year…. 2025 has seen some great movies, some really bad movies, and some that really did surprise us here at Entertainment Swindon.

Superman – James Gunn

OK, so I’m going to just get stuck right in and cause controversy right from the start!… Superman for me, I guess did what it needed to do at the box office, and thats about it. I was really excited ahead of the release, James Gun is a great director, the idea of stripping back Superman back to Christopher Reeve Superman, the costume going back to basics, but looming in the back of my head was the disjointed mess of DCU, with most movies just being a disappointment, rather than leaving me with the excitement of wanting to watch the movie again right away, like the MCU did up to Avengers End Game. DC & Marvel have such a huge abundance of content from the comics going back decades, its just so shocking these studios bring out a movie that should be awesome, but is really something you want to just shit down the toilet!

James Gunn’s Superman (2025) movie for a messy, with an overstuffed plot much like the plate I pile up on Christmas Day, the characters were weak, even Superman depiction throughout the movie was just weak and even goofy!

This was supposed to be the Superman reboot, and for me, that means you should concentrate on the main character, have no more than a couple of villans, and just let us get to know this new incarnation of Superman. Instead Gunn decided to through as many characters into one movie, including The Justice Gang. It left the movie with no narrative, no focus, and just a wish in my head, I had not just walked into the movie theatre.

Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two

OK, yes I’m staying controversial and hitting out at another huge movie of 2025… Now, for me, again I was really excited to get in the cinema to watch this movie! I love Tom Cruise! Some of my favourite movies of all time star Tom Cruise, Top Gun, Risky Business, Reacher, The Firm, A Few Good Men, Interview With A Vampire, Days of Thunder, Born on The Fourth of July, Cocktail and Color of Money. But the concluding instalment of Mission Impossible was disappointing, it was just way too long, too much dialogue and just very, very flat, with a confusing story, with even the stunts falling flat for me with too much CGI, and this for me was one of the biggest disappointments, as Cruise throughout his movies often did his own stunts, which made his movies more authentic.

Also, Gabriel, the villain was by far the weakest antagonist of all the franchise, lacking in the menace of previous Mission Impossible villains.

Overall the story was just too confusing, with too many moving parts, too many side plots, way, way too much dialogue with the characters seemingly explaining the plot which slowed the pace of the movie down, making it feel like I had sat through an 8hr movie. OK, so the movie was just short of 3hrs in reality, but it felt like it was 8hrs long, and really should have been made a faster pace 2hr movie to end the franchise on a high. A real disappointing conclusion to what was a great franchise of great movies.

Star Trek: Section 31

A movie that should just have never been made, it felt like whilst watching this Star Trek Spin-Off, it was literally just made in hope of name and iconic heritage of Star Trek that it would be a success, and a great movie… I think it has to be the worst Star Trek incarnation of the whole franchise.

This was not a bad movie, because it was made for TV, it was just a really bad movie! You will be better off watching Star Trek The Voyage Home, which was considered the worst movie within the Franchise, but over the years, it has grown on most Trekkies and fans of the franchise and become a cult classic. I will safely bet that Section 31 will never gain a cult following, and will be consigned to the bin.

War of the Worlds

Don’t break whats not broken!… Reboots are more often bad! And never as good as the originals… Just look at the Tom Cruise reboot of this movie! Even Tom Cruise couldn’t make a reboot of this iconic movie!

This incarnation of H.G. Wells novel starred Ice Cube was an example of why you should never make a reboot, especially of a successful movie. Its like a lost camera movie, low budget, and doesn’t even feel like its even about what the title of the movie say… Its most definitely not Ronseal! This was the most abismal movie I’ve seen in many years! It goes to the top of the list of bad movies ever!

Bride Hard

It is what it is… If you’re one of the unfortunate ones to have wasted nearly two hours of your life on this movie, you will know.

This is a real URGH! Movie!

Its a why did I just pay to watch this shit kind of movie! Some will enjoy, but not the type of person that enjoys quality. More the sort of person that thinks Weatherspoons is a great place to go for a drink an a bit to eat!

Starring Rebel Wilson, who is quite possibly the most urgh of the movie! The plot is ugh. The only good thing about this movie is that after 105mins it does end.

The mix of rom-com, a shit plot and poor action scenes leaves you wanting to stab your eyes with a blunt rusty knife, its that bad!

If you have not seen this movie yet, then let me do you a solid… Pass it by on streaming services and save yourself 105mins of torturous mind numbing pain that has comparison to ripping your arm off and force feeding yourself with it!

Jurassic World: Rebirth

Why wasn’t I surprised?! The previous instalment was bad enough, but Rebirth was just sending this awesome franchise down the toilet! Movie makers really should learn when to stop, end on a high, and not keep flogging a dead horse.

The film takes place decades after the original, where dinosaurs now live among us in the wild but have almost died out due to the unsuitable environment. But a dodgy pharmaceutical company suspects the DNA of some of the dinos left on a remote island can be used to create a ground-breaking medicine. As the franchise has progressed, or should I say regressed, its been less about the dinosaurs, and more about dodgy corporate suits and mad scientists looking to make money at any expense and makers of the movies making up dinosaurs, because obviously a T-Rex just isn’t scary enough these days FFS! Even Scarlet Johansson couldn’t save this movie!
