A rare and striking photograph of one of Longleat’s elusive red squirrels has been selected to feature in the Wiltshire estate’s 2027 calendar, following the return of its popular photography competition.

The competition, relaunched after strong engagement last year, attracted more than 800 entries from amateur and enthusiast photographers keen to see their work showcased by the iconic estate.

Longleat has now confirmed Alan Jones as this year’s winner, with judges praising the clarity, composition and rarity of the image captured. Alan also picked up second spot with his picture of a group of sea lions in the water.

Alison Maynard, Head of Retail at Longleat and lead judge, said the winning photograph stood out among an exceptionally high standard of submissions.

“Our red squirrels are one of our more elusive animal residents, meaning it’s rare to get such a clear photograph of them,” she said.

“It is always difficult to choose a winner due to the high standard of entries we receive and with that in mind, this year we also chose a runner up image which will be featured on our merchandise.”

Judging was carried out by Alison alongside Longleat photographer and videographer Tom Anders, and Ian Turner, Animal Department Media Coordinator and keen photographer.

As part of the prize, Alan will receive a copy of the publication and enjoy a complimentary day out at Longleat.
