Longleat’s pod of hippos are celebrating their first World Hippo Day on 15 February in their state-of-the-art “hippodrome” on the Wiltshire estate.

The four-strong pod have been settling into their new surroundings, including purpose-built complex with indoor pools, outside paddock and are now enjoying the introduction of a mud wallow.

Lead Keeper of Lake and Birds, Lauren Bow, said, “They are settling in really well, they are showing off their personalities and we’re getting to know them.”

Lola, Hodor, Manon and Matylda, arrived at Longleat in the summer of 2025, marking a return for the species after the death of long-standing resident Spot, in January 2024.

“We’re in the process of mixing the two pairs together, which we’ve taken our time on to get right. Hodor has been getting on with the young girls, Manon and Matylda — in fact, they put him in his place which we didn’t expect, and they all seem to have a positive relationship.

“When we then started introducing Lola to the other girls, there was more of a personality clash. Lola is older and therefore much more territorial, especially when it comes to her son, Hodor.”

Keepers are hoping to introduce the hippos to Half Mile Pond soon, with final safety measures being put into place, namely the arrival of a state-of-the-art boat to allow them to cross to Colobus Monkey Island.

“With it being the season of love with Valentine’s Day, we’re pleased to say there are positive signs between Hodor and the young girls. They often go nose to nose and the girls also like to lick his nose as a sign of affection.

“It’s currently like bringing your mum along on a first date for Hodor, particularly as Lola is protective of him.”

As Hodor gets closer to sexual maturity, keepers are expecting his hormones to change and as he continues to grow, it will improve his confidence and mean he’s less reliant on mum.

In the video update, Lauren and senior keeper Ian, give the hippos their breakfast, consisting of cabbage, spring greens and kale, as well as a special pellet mix.

While the majority of their diet is hay, this mix acts as a reward for training, particularly as keepers work on their recall in preparation for their introduction to Half Mile Pond.

The hippos can be seen from Jungle Cruise, Longleat’s boat safari, grazing in their grass paddock.
