On Thursday 26th February, Entertainment Swindon was invited to the soft launch of Mackenzies Bar & Cafe in Old Town’s Wood Street. The popular Old Town venue which has been welcoming the people of Swindon since 1990 had been shut for refurbishment throughout February.

Walking through the doors on Thursday evening, the bar gave a welcoming feel, and a fantastic modern contemporary fresh look, whilst still keeping its industrial theme. The main bar area has had extra lighting added, also with coloured lighting to give customers a great vibe on the night time. Everything down to the features showed a lot of thought, love and care had gone into revamping the whole bar throughout, not just the ground floor, but the upstairs area and the garden courtyard area too.

Open the doors to be welcomed by cozy leather sofas as you walk on in to stunning features from carefully chosen lighting to the beautifully finished wooden flooring, bar and the original stone walls. Continue out to the garden and again see a beautiful transformation, before you head upstairs to stunning features and cozy feel! Mackenzies is now open for business from tonight and a must for Swindonians to check out whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or a great night out! Or even just for a chilled coffee! #review #swindon #nightlife #lifestyle #entertainmentnews

Downstairs, extra large screen TVs had been added, so you can now watch live sport on five screens, along with a new DJ booth and raised platform for live music, and the area in front of the DJ space is clear for people to get up and dance when the DJ bangs out the tunes, or when a live band performs.

Outside, the canopy had been replaced by a large roof area running the length of the seating area on the left, still allowing plenty of sunlight to beam through on those sunny summer days, with the heat lamps moved closer to the seating area for customers to enjoy outside in those colder evenings.

Upstairs also looked amazing, with a continued modern contemporary look, with its own entrance from the ground floor which is a great area for private parties, corporate functions, buffet, or a quiet sit down meal.

Just as before the bar was closed for refurbishment, Mackenzies continues to offer a relaxing place for a coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner served between 9am through to 9pm seven days a week. As well as their daily Happy Hour between 4pm and 9pm, and two-for-one cocktails and discounts on prosecco, wine and spirits.

Opening hours have been extended for the bar to open later than prior to the refurb, with Fridays & Saturdays open till 2am, with resident DJs and themed nights planned for every Thursday and Sunday.

Speaking to the Owner, Gael Mackenzie, he said: “We want people to see Mackenzies as a chameleon bar, where you can come in for a relaxed breakfast, lunch or dinner, or even just a coffee before the lights go down and the night time vibe takes over where it turns into a late night bar”.

As we got the tour from General Manager, Thamires Pereira, she told us: “Its been a full refurbishment from top to bottom, we’ve listened to customers ideas, and we have had a few of our own to really give the place a fresh look, whilst still keeping that rustic industrial look”.

Speaking further to Pereira, she told us: “We are excited about reopening, and have some great plans, be more community, getting people out more, offering a fun place for people to come, with live music, DJ nights, Ladies Nights, and even pub quizzes and Rock n Roll Bingo”!
