This week, we’re bringing you a huge German Armed Forces line-up for RIAT26, including three incredible flying displays!
The Panavia Tornado returns to the flying display – a rare and unforgettable sight.

Nicknamed the Mighty Fin, the Panavia Tornado was originally known as the Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA) program and was a joint program between the UK, Italy and Germany. Designed as a specialist low-level strike aircraft, 990 were eventually produced for the three partner nations and Saudi Arabia.
The Tornado was produced in three main variants, the IDS which was the main strike variant, ECR which is an advanced anti-radar variant and the ADV which was an interceptor variant. The latter differed from the IDS and ECR by featuring more powerful engines, a lengthened fuselage to accommodate more fuel and was fitted with the Foxhunter air-to-air radar. The type became famous for its ultra-low-level exploits during the first Gulf War, attacking Iraqi airfields.
The German Air Force originally took delivery of 247 Tornados, including 35 ECR variants, the remainder being IDS variants. These were further supplemented between 1994 and 2005 as the German Navy either retired or transferred to the Air Force their own fleet of 112 Tornado IDS aircraft.
Making their RIAT debut since re-establishing a solo display, the German Air Force will be sending their Tornado solo display to perform in the flying display at this year’s Air Tattoo.
The Tornado is a twin engine, variable-sweep wing multi-role combat aircraft which was up to 2019 the backbone of the RAF, and in the words of our editor: “Its a BEAST!”… With todays technology leaving character and looks at the door, replaced with tech with no personality.
Joining it, the German Air Force’s Eurofighter EF2000 will also take to the skies as part of our ‘Fighter Meet’ theme.
On the ground, don’t miss the Airbus A321-251NX making its RIAT debut, alongside returning favourites including the A400M, CH-53G, and Sea Lynx.

Plus, the NH90 will feature in both flying and static displays!

A big thank you to our German partners.
