The Oasis was built in 1976, a building ahead of its time and went on to become not just a local iconic building, but a national iconic building, much loved by the people of Swindon.

The iconic building opened on New Years Day 1976, its purpose built leisure facility with a beach style tropical lagoon pool situated right beneath the dome roof that gave it its iconic status in later life.

This was not just a swimming facility, it housed other leisure facilities such as squash courts, and accommodated, sporting facilities from badminton to 5-a-side soccer and the capacity to accommodate music events for 3000 fans.

After GLL surrendered their leases on the building and its closure in November 2020, a group formed to save the iconic building, ‘The Save The Oasis’ action group.

Since its closure, of the Oasis had sat in limbo, but due to the committed hard efforts of the group, the Oasis was saved from demolition or other sad fates and given a Grade II listing by the department for Culture, Media & Sport on Historic England’s advice, protecting the building, and finally secured the building to be renovated and re-opened for the 1st January 2026, exactly 50yrs after its historic grand opening in 1976.
