This week at CinemaCon, Paramount officially confirmed that a much anticipated sequel to Top Gun: Maverick is in the works. Tom Cruise is set to return as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, along with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and writer Ehren Kruger.

Although its not clear if director Joseph Kosinski will be back for the third instalment, but in 2025, Kosinski did look very invested in the project

“Ehren Kruger is writing the script as we speak,” Kosinski said. “It’s a big idea that I spent almost a year developing — working with some friends at the Navy and Lockheed. And yeah, Ehren’s into it now, so we’ll see how it comes along.”

Top Gun: Maverick was released in 2022, 36years after the original Top Gun. Which saw the long-awaited sequel gross a staggering $1.5billion worldwide at the box office on a budget of $170million, providing movie theatres with a much-needed boost in the aftermath of the COVID 19 pandemic.

The movie saw Cruise reprising his role as the Naval Aviator code-named “Maverick.” After years away, Top Gun: Maverick saw Pete Mitchell returning to the “Top Gun” training program, this time as an instructor. However, things get personal when he discovers that one of his students, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), is the son of Pete “Goose” Bradshaw, Mitchell’s friend and ‘Rear’ who died in the first movie.

Top Gun: Maverick earn’t a 96% positive “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Along with Cruise and Teller, Top Gun: Maverick also starred Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Manny Jacinto as Maverick’s Top Gun students. Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Charles Parnell, Ed Harris, and Bashir Salahuddin appeared in supporting roles, with original Top Gun co-star Val Kilmer reprising his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. Kilmer in one of his final film performances before his death (though Kilmer is apparently set for more film appearances after his death).
