This week brings another exciting addition to the flying display for RIAT26.  Organisers of this years show confirm the Italian Army’s participation, who will be showcasing the rare Agusta Mangusta in the flying display, which is a welcomed addition.

The A-129 Mangusta was the first dedicated attack helicopter to be developed in Europe. The type was originally developed in response to a 1970s Italian Army requirement for an anti-tank helicopter and the A-129 was initially developed as a joint Italian-German project until Germany pulled out. The A-129 continued as an Italian only project resulting in a first flight during 1983 of the A-129 Mangusta. The first attempt to expand on the type’s capabilities was via a joint project between Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and the UK. However, this project also collapsed in the 1990s when the Netherlands and the UK pursued their own programmes. The A-129 has constantly been updated and the latest version, the A-129D carries advanced avionics and is armed with the advanced Spike-ER anti-tank missile.

They will also be bringing a Boeing Chinook for the static display.  On the ground, even more aircraft have been confirmed, including a Scottish Aviation Bulldog, a SIAI Marchetti SF.260D in Italian Air Force livery, and a British Aerospace Hawk.

The SIAI-Marchetti SF.260 was developed by Italy in the early 1960s as a light aircraft and has found favour with a number of militaries as a trainer with aerobatic capabilities. Currently in service with 20 militaries around the world, over 870 SF.260s have been produced to date. The SF.260 has been produced in both piston and turboprop versions with a number of retired examples finding their way into civilian ownership.
The SF.260D is a modernised civilian version which is based on the military SF.260M, featuring a strengthened airframe. In the United States, the SF.260 was originally marketed as the Waco Meteor.

This will also mark RIAT’s first appearance of this Hawk in civilian hands.  With less than three months to go until RIAT26, discussions with participating Air Arms continue as more aircraft announcements expected in the coming weeks.
