A 120-foot-tall scarecrow will take to the skies above Longleat in Wiltshire when it makes its UK debut at the estate’s showcase event, Icons of the Sky.

Called Smiley, its owner and pilot Jack Semler and wife Lynn will be bringing the hot air balloon from America for the event which is now in its third year.

Also making its first appearance will be the rare Chateau Balleroy balloon, commissioned by Malcolm Forbes, publisher of Forbes magazine, who built a world leading collection of special-shape balloons – each designed to represent a country he visited.

An aerial feast is promised from 11th to 13th September with guests having the opportunity to see two mass hot air balloon ascents per day, an afternoon air display, tethered balloons, hot air balloon night glow, airborne pyrotechnics and a firework finale

As well as new special shape balloons, popular favourites will also be returning from Elii the Elephant to Longleat’s own Adelaide and Simbaloo, representing the famous lions and koalas.

Scott Ashman, Head of Operations at Longleat, said “We’re incredibly excited by this year’s line-up and for guests to experience the spectacle of Icons of the Sky.

“We have a range of warbirds across the weekend, with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire Pair on Friday & Saturday to the P51D Mustang ‘Marniell’ on each day. We’ll also have fantastic aerobatics, including Chris Burkett’s G Force Aerobatics, which is always popular with the crowd.”

The three-day extravaganza will also see tethered displays, where classic shapes & characters will be inflated for guests to see up close, including Thomas the Tank Engine.

“It’s fantastic to see such a variety in special shape balloons to join our mass ascents alongside Simbaloo and Adelaide. These take place in the morning and evening, giving guests two chances to see the skies above Longleat come to life.

“And the day wouldn’t be complete without our iconic Night Glow and fireworks. As evening falls, seeing the balloons illuminate to music is always a treat and the perfect way to round off the day.

“It’s an incredible event which is included in our day ticket.”

Flights are all subject to weather conditions

Icons of the Sky is included in Day Tickets and available for Members to book for £1 on Friday & Sunday.
