Today, Swindon Town Football Club have announce that midfielder Matty Virtue has joined Swindon Town on a two-year deal.

The 29-year-old midfielder has put pen to paper on a two-year contract at The Nigel Eady County Ground following two seasons at Fleetwood Town, subject to EFL approval, making him the third signing this summer. With over 240 senior appearances in the EFL, including Fleetwood Town, Blackpool, Lincoln City and Notts County.

The Surrey-born midfielder who started his youth career at Chelsea, before signing for Liverpool at the age of 10years, captaining Liverpool’s Under 23’s in 2018, before breaking through to senior level.

He made 89 appearances during his two seasons at Fleetwood, contributing 19 goals and assists. His standout 2024/25 campaign saw him score nine league goals from midfield.

The move also reunites Virtue with defender Mitch Clark, who completed his own switch to the Nigel Eady County Ground earlier this summer after leaving Fleetwood.

Virtue gained his first experience of senior football when he joined Notts County on loan for the second half of the 2018/2019 season. Virtue impressed during his spell with the Magpies, making 15 appearances as the club secured a place in the Sky Bet League Two Play-Offs.

Following a successful loan stint, Virtue completed a permanent move to Blackpool in the summer of 2019.

He remained at Bloomfield Road for the following five years, making over 100 appearances for Blackpool and contributing to a combined 12 goals and assists for The Tangerines.

Midway through his spell on the Fylde coast, Virtue joined SkyBet League One side Lincoln City on loan for the 2022/2023 season, making 36 appearances for The Imps.

In the summer of 2024, Virtue signed for Fleetwood Town and enjoyed a particularly successful spell at Highbury, establishing himself as a key figure for The Cods.

During two year stint in Lancashire, he made 89 appearances for Fleetwood, contributing towards a combined 19 goals and assists, before joining Swindon ahead of the 2026/2027 season.

Speaking on joining Ian Holloway’s side, he said: “Obviously there’s one aim everyone knows it, and you want to be successful in your football career, the club wants to be successful, so why would I not want to join.”

Virtue added: “It’s always nice to come back in; there’s always a bit of nerves meeting a new set of lads, and a new staff, but they’ve all been really helpful and accommodating and I’m looking forward to kicking on.”
