Fun For The Family
We’ll have lots of fun for all the family including WW2 object handling, giant floor games, WW2 marble games and footplate visits.Carry out your own experiments as they did in the laboratory at Swindon Works. Test the properties of metals, and discover which materials make the best conductors. *Experiment sessions suitable for ages 7 plus.

Visit the Air Raid Shelter
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit our reconstructed Public Air Raid Shelter. Usually only open to visiting school groups, it’s crammed full of original Second World War objects and ephemera. The Air Raid Warden will sound our genuine air raid siren and usher visitors into the suitably dark and cramped space inside the shelter. There, visitors will discover how people kept their morale high and passed the time whilst the sound effects of the Blitz rumble on in the background.
Tickets for the ‘Hands on’ Air Raid experience are £3.00 per person in addition to your entrance fee. Bookings can be made at the ticket desk on the day, but it is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment as places are limited. Select your session when booking your event ticket

Air Raid sessions are at 11.00am, 12.00pm, 1.15pm 2.15pm and 3.00pm. Suitable for ages 7 and over*. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
*Children under 7 are welcome to book on to the experience but please be aware the experience includes a siren sounding and being in a dark space.

STEAM tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway, a network that, through the pioneering vision and genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, set the standard for rail travel.

This story is brought to life with famous GWR locomotives, imaginative story-telling displays, videos – mixing rare archive film footage with the stories of ex-railway workers – hands-on exhibits, interactive displays and a large number of rare GWR objects memorabilia. Take advantage of our reduced admission and explore all of this and more!
Go Great Western
Don’t miss the chance to see our new area ‘Go Great Western’! This permanent redisplay tells the story of how GWR developed into the holiday line taking people from all over the country to the South West, giving birth to the modern tourism industry and highlighting other forms of transport GWR operated, from buses and boats to air services.
