Tips for Enjoying Swindon’s Live Music

Here at Entertainment Swindon, we have put together our top tips to making the most of your live music experience in Swindon, here are a few of our insider tips:

  • Check Schedules in Advance: Live music can be spontaneous, but for the best chance of catching your preferred acts, always check the venue’s website, social media pages (Facebook is particularly popular with smaller venues), or call ahead, and of course CHECK OUT THE ENTERTAINMENT SWINDON WEEKLY GIG GUIDE (CLICK HERE). Many venues post their upcoming events weekly.

  • Embrace Local Talent: Swindon has a wealth of talented musicians across various genres. Don’t hesitate to support local acts – you might discover the next big thing! Many of the pubs mentioned are champions of local artists.

  • Consider the Vibe: Each venue has its own unique atmosphere. The Victoria Inn offers a classic rock pub feel, while The Hop Inn provides a more relaxed atmosphere. LEVELs offers a more lively bigger production concert experience, whislt still being a 400 capacity venue. So choose based on the kind of night you’re looking for.

  • Public Transport and Parking: Swindon town centre has more than enough parking, many just a minute or two from your venue of choice., and with the new Bus Bulovard, public is well-served by public transport. Many venues are within walking distance of the main bus station and the train station.

  • Embrace the Unexpected: Sometimes the best music nights are the ones you don’t plan. Try popping into a pub that you have never thought about checking out, that has music playing and see what you discover. Swindon’s live music scene thrives on this kind of serendipity.

The Broader Music Culture and Related Interests

Swindon’s love for music extends beyond just live performances. The town has a history of supporting arts and culture, which naturally fosters a thriving music scene. Understanding this context can enrich your experience.

And this is set to get even better with the town receiving £1.2million after two years of Swindonian’s with a huge passion of arts, culture and music coming together for the town under the name of Magic Swindon, now The Swindon Arts & Culture Collective.

Local Breweries and Their Support for Music

It’s worth noting the symbiotic relationship between local breweries and live music venues. Places that serve excellent craft beers often also host live music. For instance, exploring the craft beer scene in Swindon can lead you to hidden gems that also feature fantastic live performances.

If you’re interested in the craft beer culture that often goes hand-in-hand with live music venues, you might find Entertainment Swindon’s Pug Guide a useful resource for understanding this connection and discovering more about the beverage side of your night out. Offering a growing insight into Swindon’s pub/bar/restaurants and night time economy.

Music Shops and Resources

While not strictly live music bars, it’s worth mentioning that Swindon has plenty of music and record retailers, from of course HMV Records in the heart of the town centre, to our amazing independent music retailers that are vital to nurturing local talent.

These are places where musicians buy instruments, trade records, and often network. Supporting these types of businesses indirectly benefits the live music scene by providing essential resources for artists. You can find more about the broader music and arts scene in Swindon by checking out local listings and community boards.

We have Holmes Music on Farringdon Road, which is home to a huge stock of instruments, sound equipment, sheet music and so much more… As well as this, Holmes Music is home to Red House Records, an Aladdin’s Cave of great vinyl, not only new, but many are old original vinyl and plenty of collectors vinyl too.

In the town centre, we have Festival Records store at the weekly market in town, who also organise the monthly Record Fair at the Swindon Hub. You will also find many of the local charity shops have a great selection of vinyl for sale too.

Supporting the Scene: Your Role as a Patron

As a visitor or a local enjoying Swindon’s live music, your patronage is crucial. Buying drinks, enjoying the food, and most importantly, showing enthusiasm for the performers all contribute to the venues’ ability to keep hosting live music.

Consider purchasing merchandise from bands if they have it available. This direct support helps artists and keeps the local music economy vibrant.

Also, its important to understand how the wider world of pubs and bars across the UK has been extremely tough since COVID, last year (2025) 350 pus/bars closed their doors forever, the year before another 350 closed. In 2026, its predicted that over 550 pubs/bars will close their doors for the last time.

There are several reasons for this, first, COVID, its been 4yrs since we came out of this, and it is still effecting life in general, the ecconomy, and of course the pub and bar industry. Coming out of COVID, we went straight into a Living Crisis, first caused by the war in Ukraine, but now with the events going on surrounding Iran, life has got more financially tough for all.

The pub/bar industry has taken the brunt of this, and we wont even go into how the current government (Labour) have treated the industry. Finally, drinking and social habits. As a proud card carrying member of GenX, we were a generation that started the weekend on Wednesday, and went through to Sunday early hours. A day session on a Saturday would continue into a night session, and before you knew it you had done a 14hr sess. Today the younger Millennials and GenZ, seem to head out not before 11pm, gone are the days of pub from 7pm 8pm, and then clubs at midnight, now its start night out around 11pm and head straight to the late license bars and clubs. Often the night time lifestyle does not get vibrant till gone midnight.

Yes, prices are up, everything is more expensive, but, how about go out early anyway, head to a local pub, check out those with early happy hours for a cheaper drink or two. Maybe just have just one or two drinks, one or two is better for no sales across the bar for the towns landlords.
